Denotation and connotation

Denotation:

1) Babies - enjoying themselves - on roler skates
2) Set in a park
3) Long shot
4) Buildings in the back ground
5) High key lighting
6) Water bottles everywhere. particularly the foreground

Connotation:

The high key lighting and the babies enjoying themselves represents the 'feel-good factor' or a warm summers day which is when people tend to feel their best. The long shot gives 'a wider view' or 'bigger perspective on life'. Having the water bottle in the foreground makes it the centre of attention and there is a sharp focus on it so that it immediately catches the eye of the audience before anything else in the picture. The babies are still in sharp focus but not as sharp as the bottle, this makes them the second focus of the viewer as babies usually are refreshed giving the sence of feeling you will get from the product.

The Vampire Diaries

The Vampire Diaries is an Amerian TV show about a 17 year old girl, Elena whos' life is suddenly flipped upside down when she loses both her parents in a tragic car crash off Wickery Bridge. As school starts again, she decides to go back to the way things were before the accident, she re-joins the cheerleading squad and tries to be her old, happy self......until the new guy in school shows up. Everything changes.

New boy Stefan has a secret. A one hundred and fifty year old secret. Which is revealed when his vengful big brother, Damon, shows up in town....will Stefan be able to keep his dark past in the shadows or will Damon bring the demon in him into the light?

As time passes, Elena finds out more about Stefan and the demon he hides inside, everything from the demons lurking within him to the centuries old ex-girlfriend trapped beneath the towns old church...the ex-girlfriend that is her reflection from the past. Damon plans to release Elenas doupleganger, Katherine, from the church tomb but Stefan is desperate to stop him before he releases her along with twenty-seven other vampires from their childhood town.

Eventually, Damon opens the tomb with the help of Elena's witch best friend, Bonnie, but to his dismay all of the vampires are in the tomb with the exception of one.... Katherine.

This is a brief summary of the first season of The Vampire Diaries, as the series goes on the story develops into a twist of witches, werewolves, vampires, douplegangers, ghosts and hybrids, love triangles evolve as well as many other sharp turns to the story. It is a gripping series where you can relate to all of the characters in every situation, the characters are portrayed in such a way that you can almost empathise with their every emotion. A definite 5 star rating from me.

Why I chose Media Studies

When I chose my GCSE options I was mainly looking at the more academic subjects as I wish to go to university and would need the English Baccalaureate. My first two choices were French and Geography, both of which are more academic subjects.
Because of this I wanted to do something a little more creative and fun. Subjects such as Art, Textiles and Resistant materials appealed to me but I wanted to do something I had never done before.
Something completely new and a little out of my comfort zone. Media Studdies was just what I wanted to do, it was entirely new to me yet looked like I would need to be creative and have fun
